Now Tesla is claiming that Cybertruck was the ‘best-selling electric pickup in US’ last year despite not even reporting the number of deliveries.
A lot of context is required here.
As we’ve pointed out multiple times, Tesla is one of the most, if not the most, secretive automakers when it comes to sales reports. However Tesla doesn’t provide a breakdown of sales by model or region.
For comparison, here’s Ford’s Q4 2024 sales report compared to Tesla’s:
You could argue that Tesla has fewer models than Ford, and that’s true, but Tesla’s report only provides two lines, despite having six different models.
There’s no reason not to provide a detailed breakdown like other automakers, except to make it difficult to verify the performance of each vehicle program.
This has been the case with the Cybertruck, where Tesla is grouping its deliveries with those of the Model S, Model X, and Tesla Semi.
Despite the lack of detailed disclosure, Tesla has managed to claim that the Cybertruck became “the best-selling electric pickup truck” in the US in 2024:
It seems quite plausible. Ford reported 33,510 F-150 Lightning deliveries in the U.S. in 2024, while estimates for Cybertruck deliveries are around 40,000 units globally.
Although most of these deliveries are believed to be in the U.S., Tesla only delivered the Cybertruck in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in 2024.
However, there’s important context to consider, as discussed in our recent article titled ‘Tesla Cybertruck sales are disastrous.’
First, Tesla had a backlog of over 1 million Cybertruck reservations since 2019, leading many to assume that demand had been secured for years and that production would be the main constraint.
Yet, according to estimates, Cybertruck deliveries were either stagnant or lower in Q4 compared to Q3, despite Tesla introducing more affordable versions of the vehicle and ramping up production.
After just around 40,000 deliveries, Ford’s F-150 Lightning, with nearly 11,000 deliveries in Q4 in the U.S., likely outsold the Cybertruck during the same period.
