MG Motor was a British auto brand that now is a part of one of the Chinese state owned SAIC Motor’s companies . The company came in the news to launch a new semi-solid-state battery-powered EV next year.
MG, already leading as the top-selling Chinese EV brand with models like the MG4, is aiming even higher. According to General Manager Zhou Xing, the brand plans to launch its first EV in 2025 powered by a semi-solid-state battery, signaling a major leap in its innovation strategy.
Zhou posted on social media, saying, “The first new model to be launched by the MG brand next year may be equipped with a semi-solid battery.” He further added,”Let me report to you first that the price is not expensive.” And the new battery will be standard on the upcoming model.
MG motor’s general manager confirmed that brand will launch two new models in China and two refreshed ones in 2025.
There are several automakers and other companies that are in hurry to launch solid-state EV batteries, promising drastically more range, higher energy density and faster charging speeds. However there is issue of safety, performance and scalability of production which are the major hurdles in the development.
MG’s upcoming semi-solid-state EV battery combines solid and liquid electrolytes, making it easier to produce but with lower energy density compared to fully solid-state batteries. Meanwhile, companies like Factorial Energy are advancing all-solid-state EV batteries, which promise significant improvements.
Factorial recently introduced its Solstice all-solid-state cells with Mercedes-Benz, boasting “up to 80% higher energy density” than typical lithium-ion batteries. According to Factorial’s CTO and Co-Founder Alex Yu, this technology could unlock over 600 miles of range while reducing weight by 40%. Their batteries, designed to achieve a 40Ah capacity, are expected to launch by the end of the decade.
Mercedes plans to begin road tests of EVs equipped with solid-state batteries within months, aiming for large-scale production by 2030.
